Subproject 4 ‘Organization as Social Level’

Organization as Social Level and Social System. A Reconstruction of Sociological Systems Theory of Organization

Sociological Theory, Zeppelin University Friedrichshafen, Lake Constance

The fourth sub-project elaborates a history of the systems theory concept of formal organization and addresses its continuation in more recent network theories, thus focusing on the successive dissolution of ‘bureaucratic’ administrative concepts since the postwar period.

The dissertation in this project examines the development of sociological theory of organization and administration in the mirror of polycratic national-socialist rule. Theory on National Socialism, which gravitates to evermore network-oriented approaches, is confronted with an ethnographic reconstruction of the supposed ‘class-conciousness’ of german functionaries between 1933 and 1945.
